Although the respiration sensor is frequently called a strain gauge, the Thought Technology sensor does not use an actual strain gauge to measure respiration. The Respiration sensor is sensitive to stretch. When strapped around a client's chest or abdomen, it will convert the expansion and contraction of the rib cage or abdominal area, to a rise and fall of the signal on the screen.

The respiration signal is a relative measure of chest expansion so there are no standard units of measure for respiration. From the raw signal waveform, the software is able to calculate the respiration rate and relative breath amplitude. If two sensors are used, it is possible to compute the difference in amplitude of expansion between the thorax and abdomen.
